We have implemented a user modelling component for a hypermedia-based documentation system for hospitals and tested it under real conditions. A new method for user modelling has been developed which focuses on the tasks performed by the users. It allows adaptive browsing support for users with different level of experience, data- protection, and a level of adaptability according to the preferences of individual users.

Our recent experiments showed that the differences between the information needs of users are not only quantitative, but qualitative. Experienced users prefer sometimes to organize their search in a different way. That is why the user model supports also a smooth transition in the options for search provided by the interface to novice-users and to expert users.
